With the successful launch of the Shelby GT behind it and retiree GT-H Hertz rental Mustangs selling as high as $90,000 at auction, the Shelby leviathan continues to climb forward and give forth special-edition Mustangs.
In New York, Shelby launches the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR, a special-edition GT500 commemorating the 40th anniversary of the original “King of the Road.†The GT500KR is the second product, after the GT500, to wear the almost-defunct SVT badge, reminding us that Ford still claims it has a performance division.
Detroit veteran Peter Muscat will be exporting a Ford Mustang this week, with a retractable hard top roof that will was manufactured in Malta, to the United States. This is the first of five production-ready prototypes that are to be built that he expects will lead to an order for 500 such roof mechanisms to be built in Malta each year for six years.
The Ford Mustang is ready to make its European road racing debut. Ford Racing Technology confirmed that it has begun the process of homologation of both its Mustang FR500C and FR500GT race cars for FIA competition. The Mustang FR500C, a championship-winning entry in the U.S.-based, Grand Am KONI Challenge Series, is being homologated for FIA GT4 competition, while the new Mustang FR500GT, which has not been in competition yet, is being homologated for FIA GT3 competition.
With two new special edition Mustangs that are due out later this year, including the Bullitt, Ford has seen fit to add another exclusive stallion into the mix, this time for a good cause. The “Warriors in Pink” trim package is being designed in partnership with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and will be built to order, complete with pink exterior stripes and interior stitching.
